The provincial cancer authority, Cancer Care Manitoba (CCMB), is in charge of establishing strategic priorities and long-term planning for cancer and blood disorders in the province. The CCMB offers clinical services to both adults and children. The group offers prevention, early detection, multidisciplinary cancer treatment, supportive care, and end-of-life care as part of its cancer services to Manitobans. Radiation protection in the entire province is another duty of the CCMB. Additionally, the CCMB Research Institute conducts studies on all facets of cancer and blood illnesses, as well as studies to enhance patients' stays at the facility.
Cancer Care Manitoba is proud of its volunteers, who give more than 25,000 hours annually in a variety of roles to assist offer top-notch patient care. Many volunteers give back because they or a loved one have been affected by cancer. Volunteers come from many backgrounds.
Volunteer opportunities:
Chemotherapy Clinic - Patients and visitors spend long hours in the Chemotherapy Clinic. Volunteers who are previous patients or caregivers provide support by:
- providing snacks and light lunches as well as extra amenities like heated blankets, ice water, and magazines
- educating patients about the programs and services available to them
- aiding employees in keeping the facility clean
Peer Support - The Breast and Gyne Cancer Centre of Hope provides one-on-one support to patients through a Peer Support Program. Volunteers providing support are:
- former patients who have received no further treatment for breast or gynecological cancer for at least a year.
- paired with new patients to offer continuous peer support
- matched in accordance with age, family status, diagnosis, treatment plan, and other factors
- able to offer a sympathetic ear, motivation, and emotional support
Runners/couriers - Volunteer couriers assist with ensuring the timely delivery of charts and patient samples within CancerCare Manitoba and the Health Sciences Centre.
- Volunteer Services at CancerCare Manitoba is still accepting applications for volunteers over the age of 18 during this time.
-Volunteers must follow the COVID-19 precautions, such as training and wearing of Personal Protective Equipment such as masks.

Time commitment:
On weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., there are volunteer opportunities at two locations: McDermot Avenue, St. Boniface, the Breast and Gyne Centre of Hope, and Prevention and Screening Programs. At each location, a variety of volunteer opportunities are available.
One morning or one afternoon each week is required for volunteering. There is a three-month minimum commitment. The CancerCare Manitoba Foundation also allows you to occasionally lend a hand at important occasions.
